Lots of people include decluttering and organising their homes as a New Year’s resolution. However, many reach the end of the year without achieving this goal.
Why do we often miss these goals? It’s because we don’t have a clear plan or vision. We don’t make time for it, align it with our values, or treat it as a priority.
But this year can be different. If your goal is to declutter your home, here’s how you can make decluttering work this new year.
1. Understand Your Why
Why do you want to declutter and organise your home? Sure, “less stuff” is the obvious answer, but dig deeper:
-
- Do you want more space?
-
- Are you tired of stressing about finding lost keys or that elusive left shoe?
-
- Would you like to spend less time tidying up so you can focus on properly cleaning or enjoying your home?
Your why is the foundation of your motivation. Once you’ve identified it, ask yourself why again and delve even deeper.
Here are examples of deeper whys:
-
- “I want an organised home so I can get to work on time and project the competence I feel inside. I’m tired of looking disorganised.”
-
- “I want to leave work sooner so I can attend Pilates and feel healthier.”
-
- “I want less clutter so I can finally start that sewing project I’ve been dreaming about.”
These deeper motivations will keep you going throughout the year.
2. Create a Vision
I know, I know—some of you may roll your eyes, but having a vision for your home is crucial.
With your why in mind, imagine what you want each room to look and feel like. Think about how you want to use the space. Write it down. For now, don’t worry about the how—just keep it realistic. If you’re not renovating or moving, don’t picture a mansion when you have an apartment. Stick with what’s achievable within your current four walls.
3. Set Regular 5-Minute Sessions
One reason goals fall by the wayside is that we don’t set aside time to focus on them. Often, we think we need hours to declutter, so we wait for the “perfect” moment—which rarely comes.
Here’s the secret: you don’t need hours. Five minutes a day can work wonders! For example, one of our WellSorted Home Course participants, Belinda, used 5-minute daily sessions to transform two rooms in just a few weeks.
You can do this too!
4. Have a Method to Declutter
There are countless decluttering methods out there. Why? Because everyone is different. Finding the right approach for you is key.
I’m partial to the WellSorted Six Tub Method, which I use and teach in the WellSorted Home Course. However, other methods, like focusing on one category or asking yourself a series of targeted questions, might work better for you. The important thing is to experiment and find what suits you best, helping you make decluttering work this new year.
Remember: progress is more important than perfection. There’s no one “right” way to declutter—just the way that works for you.
