Digital clutter can feel just as overwhelming as physical clutter. Between apps, emails, and photos, it often comes with a mental to-do list, too. But with just a few minutes a day, you can regain control. These quick digital decluttering tips are designed to be tackled in small bursts—think five-minute moments—that add up to a more organised, less stressful digital life. (For physical stuff, you can also check out my blog 4 Ways to Organise Your Home in 5 Minutes a Day).
1. Delete Old Emails
Start with one inbox. Delete anything you no longer need. If an email includes a task, jot it down on your to-do list and delete the message. Archive anything you may want to reference later. Once you finish one inbox, move to another. Consider consolidating email accounts to reduce future clutter. Check out my post on How To Have (And Keep) An Organised Email Inbox HERE.
2. Unsubscribe from Unwanted Newsletters
While you’re in your inbox, take a moment to unsubscribe from newsletters and promos you no longer read. Worried you’ll forget your favourite shops? Make a reference list instead. That way, when you actually need something, you can shop intentionally—not impulsively.
3. Streamline Your Note Apps
If you have notes spread across multiple apps, pick one and stick with it. Transfer the important stuff to your chosen platform and delete the rest. A streamlined system saves time and reduces mental clutter.
4. Clear Out Downloads, Deleted Photos, and Desktop Files
Quick wins: empty your Downloads folder, delete files from the Recently Deleted album in your photos, and tidy your desktop. Move anything worth keeping to a proper folder and ditch the rest.
5. Curate Your Social Media Feeds
Unfollow or remove accounts that no longer inspire or serve you. Your time and energy are precious. You can even set app limits to help curb the scroll.
6. Close Tabs and Delete Bookmarks
Too many open tabs? Close them. Old bookmarks collecting dust? Delete them. Keep only what you use regularly for quicker access.
7. Declutter and Organise Apps
Delete unused apps and group the rest into folders. Think: Health, Social Media, Travel, etc. Review your home screen layout and move your most-used apps to the front for easier access.
8. Tidy Up Your Contact and Friends Lists
Go through your phone or social contacts and remove anyone you don’t recognise or need. Merge duplicates. It makes finding the right contact faster and easier.
9. Purge Your Digital Photos
Clear out blurry shots, duplicates, and photos that don’t hold meaning. This not only saves space but makes your memories easier to enjoy. And if you’re paying for photo storage, it could even save you money.
10. Review Your Cloud Storage
Take a look at your cloud storage. Delete what you no longer need and consolidate your files in one place if it makes sense. Reducing redundant storage services saves money and supports sustainability. Always ensure you have a reliable backup system in place.
Bonus Tip:
Set some digital boundaries. Decide what’s worth saving and what’s not, so you stop the clutter before it starts. Five minutes a day can make a big difference.
